Concurrent Short Signaling Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol for Multihop Wireless Mesh Network (

    Abstract: - Multihop Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) has been highlighted as the key technology to energize the growth of internet penetration due to its greater flexibility and mobility to users. All the radio nodes in the WMNs are organized in mesh topology with the principle of multihop to resiliently extend the coverage of the network. Thus, using the idea of multihop WMNs the last mile internet coverage is widely extended. However, the challenge is arises among wireless research community in designing an efficient WMNs to provides higher throughput with utmost lower latency. In a wireless communication, Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol plays an important role in achieving higher throughput by efficiently facilitates the limited communication bandwidth of wireless channel among the radio nodes. The MAC protocol uses Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) mechanism acquire the access to the wireless channel. Even though CSMA/CA performs excellently in single hop communication, however the performance of the network drops significantly when directly implemented in multihop WMNs. ،his is due to the presence of exposed radio nodes and signaling overhead that accumulated over multihop transmission. In this work, a new technique known as Concurrent Short Signaling Medium Access Control (CSS-MAC) has proposed to solve these both issues. The basic idea of CSS-MAC protocol is to allows the radio nodes to schedule concurrent transmission whenever possible (alleviate exposed node problem) and قeduce the amount of signaling overhead over multihop transmission. The CSS-MAC was analytically examined and the result shows that it achieved higher throughput in multihop WMNs. The analytical modeling has proposed in this to demonstrate the performance of the CSS-MAC protocol in term of delay and throughput in the multihop WMN scenario. By making use the analytical models of existing mechanism (IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC, MACA-P and MARCH), the performance (in term of delay and throughput) in multihop WMN were compared. The result shows that the CSS-MAC protocol outperforms the existing protocols and it turns to fulfill the requirement multihop WMN​
